Will I see rust spots after washing?
Yes, it is relatively common for rust spots to appear on etched stainless steel, though the metal itself is technically rust-resistant.
The etching process often removes the protective chromium oxide layer that naturally prevents corrosion. If the etching "dug" into the metal or used high heat (like some laser methods), it exposes the iron underneath to moisture and air, leading to surface rust.
How to Fix It
- Remove the rust: Use a paste of baking soda and water or a mild cleaner like Bar Keepers Friend. Gently scrub the spots with a soft cloth or sponge—avoid steel wool, as it can leave behind iron particles that cause more rust.
- Passivate the steel: After cleaning, rinse and dry the tumbler thoroughly. Let it sit in open air for 24 hours; this allows the protective oxide layer to "heal" and reform.
- Prevent future spots: Hand wash the tumbler and dry it immediately after use. Avoid using bleach or soaking it for long periods.
